Y N0t 2 #25-Alexander and His Horse Bucephalus

Bucephalus was the famous horse of Alexander the Great.  The story of how this 12-year old named Alexander won a horse goes a lil' somethin' like this: a horse dealer offered the horse to Alexander's father, Philip II of Macedonia, for an enormous price. Since no one could tame the animal, Philip wasn't interested; however, Alexander was.  He promised to pay for the horse if he failed to tame it. Alexander was allowed to try to subdue the beast.  He tamed it by speaking soothingly and turning the horse so that it didn't have to see its shadow, which had seemed to distress the animal. With the horse now calm, it was clear that Alexander had won the wager. He named his prize horse Bucephalus and loved the animal so much that when the horse died in 326B.C., Alexander named a city after the horse: Bucephala.
