Y N0t blog #9-Map Comparison

Peter's Projection-
-It makes all countries the same size in accordance to each other
-distorts most shapes by making countries near the equator bigger than countries near the poles
-All North-South lines run vertically on this map. Thus, geographic points can be seen in their correct geographical relationship – northwest, northeast, southwest or southeast.
-The map shows all areas – whether it be countries, continents or oceans – according to their actual size. Accurate comparisons become possible.

Mercator Projection
-Was made in 1569
-It became the standard map projection for navigation because of its unique property of representing any course of constant bearing as a straight segment
-Greenland appears the same size as Africa, when in reality Africa's area is 14 times greater
-Practically every marine chart in print is based on the Mercator projection due to its uniquely favorable properties for navigation
-Also used in street maps for navigation
