- republic: a form of government that gives the most power to those who can vote for their leaders
- patricians: rich landowners who almost all the power
- plebeians: people like farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population
- tribunes: a group created by the plebians that was assigned to the task of electing representatives
- consuls: Rome's two officials
- senate: the aristocratic branch of Rome's government
- dictator: a leader who held all of the power in the state to make laws and command the military
- legions: a military unit that consisted of 10 cohorts (later made 9) that each had 6 centurions, all controlling 80 legionaries. However, the first cohort consisted of 5 centurions controlling 160 legionaries each
- Punic Wars: set of wars between Rome and Carthage
- Hannibal: 29-year-old Carthaginian general; wanted to avenge Carthage's earlier defeat (he's the guy who brought the elephants through the mountains to try to get to Rome)
